CPAL – A Ruby on Rails POC
Infosys Technologies Ltd. had no projects running in Ruby on Rails. This resulted in our going ahead and creating a POC in Ruby on Rails - CPAL is a tool to collaborate the learning that we struggle to acquire individually, so that collaboration can help our team to forge ahead as a whole in achieving team goals.
This concept was put forward at Infosys Technologies Ltd. together by:

The various modules in this project are:

ECM(Content Management):
We would usually keep walking around trying to ask each other for slides and documents for our presentations, as also snippets of code are usually written again and again. Why start from scratch? Using CPAL portal, we can now build on efforts by our team members. This would mean that we upload our slides, documents and code snippets for reuse. Team members would download it, change it to suit their needs and deliver suitably - the original content still remains the same.
Also, if anybody finds a group of good ones, they could just group them into a logical assembly for future reference -
Virtual Labs:
Would you want some labs to be available online?
A team member could setup a customized lab for his Trainees.The Virtual labs are a means to set up a predefined environment, for his Trainees to work on even after his online session to them. He could give it to them as an incentive to get more brownie points…. -
Communities:
Team members can form their own communities – Mathematics, Compilers, Agile, Struts……
Team members could create a discussion group….. mini ones tailor-made to their Business Units and build up a knowledge trove. -
Events:
Team members could post their Business Unit Events using the Events Module. This module could be customized more to suit individual needs. -
Blogs:
Every IBU has internal discussions. Let the team members blog it out… They could get Brownie points for sharing their knowledge proactively and there would be a subtle increase in productivity -
Tech Tips:
Tech Tips make life easy and time saved by individuals over trivial issues of various products and services. -
RSS:
Each team member keeps himself aware of happenings in your IBU, the technology, and events using RSS feeds. -
Wikis:
Lets the SMEs build up content collectively using Wikis. -
Administration:
CPAL Administration allows maintenance of each module by delegation to various team members…. Delegated module ownership for easy Administration of the Application
Solution/approach details :
CPAL used Ruby on Rails 2 which is hosted on Mongrel server. Load balancing of the application is taken care by creating Mongrel cluster. Mongrel cluster is a set of scripts that allows easy management of Mongrel instances via the init system.
The preferred configuration involves using Apache as a proxy server that sends Rails requests to Mongrel while serving requests.

Performance:
The performance test results for CPAL as obtained using Microsoft VSTS can be summarized as follows:
For a user load of 1000 concurrent users, the average response time was 0.2 sec.

This POC resulted in Infosys Technologies Ltd. getting a commercial client for themselves.
