Pro Bull Riding Crash Course
The Bull Rope
The bull rope is braided rope that wraps around the bulls chest directly behind its front legs. The bull rope is what the bull rider hangs on to during his 8-second ride. A metal cow bell is attached to the bottom of the rope which gives it some weight so that it will fall off as soon as the rider's hand is freed by either being bucked off or dismounting the animal.
8-Second Ride
In bull riding, it is required that the bull rider stay on the bull and attached to the bull rope for a full 8-seconds to receive a score from the judges. During his 8-second ride, he must not receive a disqualification (see below) or he will not get a score.
Disqualified
A bull rider can be disqualified and will not receive a score for the ride even if he stays on the bull for 8 seconds. If the bull rider touches the bull or himself with his free hand anytime before the 8-second buzzer, he is disqualified. Also, if his riding hand comes free from the bull rope anytime before the 8-second buzzer sounds, he is disqualified.
Bucked Off
A bull rider is considered bucked off when he has been thrown from the bull before the 8-second buzzer sounds. If a buck off occurs, the rider will not earn a score for the attempted ride.
The Flank Strap
A key piece of equipment in bull riding is the flank strap. It is a strap that goes around the flank of the bull. The purpose of the flank strap is to encourage the bull's natural bucking motion and to try to get the bull to extend his hind legs when trying to buck the rider off.
Contrary to popular belief, the flank strap never comes in contact with the bull's genitals and no sharp or foreign objects are ever placed inside the flank strap to agitate the bull. Pulling the flank strap too tight will restrict the bulls motion and will make it uncomfortable for the bull to perform.
The flank strap's quick release design allows it to be removed immediately after the bull leaves the arena. The concept behind the flank strap is to put enough tension on it so it will stay on but just loose enough that the bull tries kick it off, resulting in a bucking bull.
Foul
A foul can happen at any time during the 8-second ride. This occurs when something happens that puts the bull rider at a disadvantage because the bull hit himself or the rider on the bucking chute at the start of the ride or the flank strap falls off before the end of the ride. The option of a re-ride is often awarded to the bull rider when a foul occurs.
Judging
100 points would be a perfect score, and has only been recorded one time in the history of organized bull riding. Two judges have 50 points each they distribute between the bull and rider. Each judge can score the bull from 1 to 25 points and the same for the bull rider. The score from each of the two judges will then be added together to get the total score for the ride.
Re-Ride
Judges can give the bull rider a re-ride on a different bull if the first bull did not perform at the level of the other bulls in the competition, which results in the rider being at a disadvantage to being able to receive a higher score.
